Weigh Day Feb 1

It's weigh day and I'm not very happy about it.

No more Hello Kitty socks
It's the same numbers as my last weigh day. I can't say it didn't move because it did. It moved up. It moved down. But it moved up more. (Maybe I have to make sure that my body understands my goal...it's to lose the weight...to move down...not up!!) I'm over 6.8 lbs from my supposed target weight today (212.4 lbs).

No excuses.

Today is another day.

On other "list" related news, I finished watching "Gone with the Wind"  last night. All four hours of it.

Zabeel Park - Run with FRU

I said I'll be running with the guys and gals of Filipino Runners UAE (FRU), and I did. I freakin` did!! (Well, run is an exaggeration. I ran a couple of minutes, then I started walking then I waddled the rest of the way. gaaaah!!!)

It's very intimidating being with people who can really run. As in run fast. And run long. I felt like a poser, a  scam. Every fat of my body screams FAKER!!!! But what the heck. I still joined them and just ignored the voices in my head.

They were actually nice people. Very inspiring and they encouraged me the whole way. I'm just disappointed at myself though. I wanted to do at least two laps but my leg gave in again. Stupid shin splints!

As bad as my performance was, I was still ecstatic! Two people actually said that they read my blog. SOMEBODY. READS. MY. BLOG!!

Sheila's shiins = -10 points.
Sheila's blog = +100 cool points!

I really do have to apologize, I'm bad with names. If you are reading this, please do comment. Please please please...it would really make my day!!

I'll see you on Tuesday guys!! Let's make this happen.

Unbelievable!

After eating mashed potato, potato soup, salad, calamares, beef stroganoff, fish and chips, lots of iced tea, and a slice of chocolate cake ... I still lost almost a pound today! Un - freaking - believable!!

I'm not complaining... this is me being happy! Really happy! (and just so we are clear, I didn't eat all alone...I had a nice dinner with 2 friends and we shared the meal)

*happy dance*

In keeping with my mini goal, here's my breakfast:

glare!!
Raisin Oatmeal. I skipped the milk.

I got a neat hack too! Instead of buying those pre packed flavored oatmeals, I repackaged them! It would look like this:

Check out the recipe/procedure at The Simple Dollar. Good for the tummy, good for the wallet!!

I'm seriously doing something wrong...

*this is going to be a bullet point post...*

  • I have been yoyo-ing on the scale front. =(
  • Seriously, who can resist rice? (obviously not me...)
  • I need to change my eating habits, seriously!
  • Dubai Marathon is tomorrow!! (will be watching and cheering on the sidelines)
  • Currently reading : The 4 Hour Body - Tim Ferris. (will probably do a review later)
  • I was able to score a chiropractic treatment at 80% off! GoNabit FTW!!
  • Money in, money out -- will be paying off some loans today.
Mini fitness goal: photograph foods I eat.

Edited to add: I'm crossing off # 30 - Make our Family Tree. I have completed my immediate family and included a whole lot of relatives in the process.  3 down, 32 more to go!!

Weigh Day

It's weigh day today. I'm happy to report that I lost some weight since the first weigh in. Actually, I lost more than this. I knew I'd regret having nachos and dip yesterday. nachos, dip, popcorn and soda. Arrgh! I should resist cinema food.

yes, another hello kitty sock. I have 3 of those, don't judge =D

Second weigh in at 219.4.

On a related note, I chanced upon a post  about The Line Diet. You basically plot your current weight vs. your goal weight and draw a straight line across. Then you weigh yourself everyday, if your weight for the day is below the line, you eat whatever you want. If it's above the line, you have to eat low calorie food for the day and hope that tomorrow you weigh less. (If you find my explanation a bit confusing, please read all about it here.)

Now, I'm getting different opinions on weighing yourself everyday. Some people would prefer to set a specific weigh day and not be obsessed with the scales. For others, weighing everyday works. Right now I'm trying this Line Diet, it somehow makes sense.

What about you? What are your thoughts on weighing?

[If you would like to try the Line Diet, you may download the excel file via Daily Dose of Excel or use the online version]

First "Official" Weigh In

Let's welcome 2011 with my first "official" weigh in. I meant to do this  yesterday being 1-1-11, but ... yeah I forgot. [embarrassed laughter here]. I got too excited with our "New Year's Day Breakfast", I just went at it like no other.

I say "official" because I've had weigh ins before but this will be the first time that I'm actually going to post what the scale says. And It's fitting too, because I will need all the support and motivation now that I have to deal with the holiday weight.

Here goes:

Excuse the glare/flash ... and the grey polka dotted Hello Kitty socks. =p
So what's the damage? I gained about 4 lbs, more or less. I had it coming though. Holiday feast, nasty leg pain and pms cravings [sorry for the TMI bit], they don't go together, really!

There you have it! Now help me get rid of this fast...I need to hit my mini goal by May. (170 lbs, is that possible or even healthy?)

Pain, pain go away...

and don't ever come back. =(

This is the best illustration of the pain I feel on my legs. I'm guessing shin splints, but I don't know for sure since this is the first time I've felt it (when I started "running")... and I still haven't gone to the doctor to have it checked.

According to doctor Google, no running and go RICE (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate). I bought calf compression sleeves just in case.

With all the eating and celebrating.. I need to do something!! HELP!!

Present & Future Me

Just to give you an idea ...

217 lbs
I am now at 217 lbs (more or less).
174 lbs
This is my goal weight. To be at 174 lbs by May 2011. (and to be honest, I'm failing miserably... I'm waaaay behind schedule already. )

135 lbs
And this, this is my healthy weight. Someday I will be at 135 lbs.

fingers crossed.

Got 56 Seconds

My uber lame attempt at planking. Even with this "modified" plank, I had a hard time keeping my core steady. I was shaking the whole time. Hmmmm....

At least this is better than 16 seconds. =D

Here are some cool planking photos.

Anlene - Walk for Bones, The Experience

Walk for Bones was OK I guess. I just probably had a huge expectation.

We came on site around 0930. As expected, there were lots of people already lined up at the registration booth. Another long line for the free bone scan. A couple of more people lined up for something (later found out those were Organizations and Schools participating) One word came to mind, unorganized. They didn't have markers or something. Any new comer would definitely get lost.

We came in good spirits. After parking the car, we looked for the registration booth. We passed by the band (they were kids from Philippine School of Drums and Lyre). They were so cute with their uniforms on. I'm sure they prepared for this event.

When we got to the "starting point", we couldn't find the booth! Luckily a young volunteer gave us forms to fill in. Unluckily, we don't have pens with us. LOL!! A nice lady let us borrow her pen and as soon as we finished the forms, we looked for the booth again so we can get our shirts and caps.

We went near the stage to look for anyone who can help us. Finally a volunteer told us that we have to go back and check with other volunteers because they don't have shirts anymore. FRAK! So we went back to the starting point. We found a lady with boxes of shirts, so we hurriedly gave her our stubs....

"I'm sorry, but these are for our school/organizations only"  - she said. OMFG! So where are we supposed to go, really?

We went back to the booth near the stage where it was confirmed that the caps and shirts are no longer available. Bummer. That's a major disappointment but I'd rather not argue since it was a "free" event anyway. Plus all the going to and back is making me dizzy.

We settled in a corner near the stage where the host/fitness first instructor(?) was already doing the warm up exercises. In fairness to the host, he did a great job! He was able to make me laugh and even do the belly dance...well its more like a belly jiggle coz there was no room to move anyway.  He also pointed out that most of the participants were Filipinos. Woo hoo! REPRESENT!

After a few minutes, I saw people being handed out shirts. I figured they have a fresh batch so I went to the booth again. I held out the stubs and waited for the "nice" lady to attend to me. I understand that she's only a volunteer and that people can be pushy at times. They can be rude, even.

"Why are you people so RUDE?!!" - frowning-volunteer-lady said.

I was like... WHOA! She had a lot of moxie for saying that in front of a mob of people waiting for their shirts. I'm thinking, if they were more organized this wouldn't have happened. Another lady was telling her that she took two stubs and she gave only one shirt. The other claims that volunteer lady took her stubs and gave the shirts to the other lady. It was chaos, I tell you.

Finally, she took my stubs....STUBS. One for me and one for my companion, who, by the way, is just beside me. She grudgingly gave me a shirt. I told her she took two stubs and I needed two shirts. With a half frown-half evil smile, she told me, "We only give one shirt per person" .

I pointed to my cousin beside me and told frowning-volunteer-lady, "yeah, she's the other person."  She gave me another shirt, but looked at me first as if I was the devil.

Why did she take two stubs from me and only give me one shirt? Why is she showing me this kind of attitude? If she's bummed/tired and/or angry at other people, don't throw it out on me girl! I just arrived at the booth, I didn't do anything to you. I waited patiently for my turn and you give me attitude? You shouldn't be volunteering if you can't handle the pressure.

So this is us with our shirts, finally. Aside from that encounter with the "moody lady", I did enjoy the day. I met new friends (Who, by the way, had the same bad experience with the lady behind the counter. I wonder how many people complained about her...hmmm)

Spot the lady behind the counter!

This is Nikki and Steph with Gracey. This was after the 1 KM walk. Here's another thing: narrow path push plus hordes of excited people, not good. We had to leave the queue just so I can breathe. And also, the band was supposed to lead the way so we have rhythm. Not even half way through, the band was pulled out. People were asked to go straight ahead. We were so confused!

Later on I found out that people having breakfast at the nearby restaurants/cafe`s complained about the noise. What the?! Poor kids. They practiced for this event for sure. They dressed up and got there before everybody else and then they were stopped? Hay.

We lined up for the bone scanning next. My results were OK (-1.0) That's supposed to mean that my bone density is in between low and moderate risk. I was advised to drink more Anlene. (big surprise! But hey, it tastes great!!)

So after all of that, we went home and had a long nice nap. Yes, a long nice nap. We walked almost 5K after all!

1K - car park to starting point.
1K - starting point to 1k mark
1K - going back to starting point for bone scan
1K - going back to car park.
1K - walking around trying to find the booth for the shirts and the toilet. =P

Easy 5K! [edit: Come to think of it, I don't think the marker was at 1 KM.... did anybody measure?]

Now when is the next event?!

Long Weekend Coming Up....

which means I can run run run!! Ok, that's exaggerating. Just to give an update, I still can't run a decent distance without having to stop and catch my breath. The farthest I can do is 300 meters. Three. Meters. FRAK!!

Homer, I feel ya!

It's going to be half working day today. I can finish my errands in the afternoon. Do some planks. Maybe cross some movies out from my movie list. Or do planks while watching.

Tomorrow, I'll "jalk". I need to increase my endurance level. Any suggestions??

Just the way you Plank

How Long Can You Plank?

asked Ben Davis of Ben Does Life. He made it to 86 seconds.  That's 1 minute, 43 26 seconds. Almost 2 minutes!!

Ben, planking it

What is a Plank?

The plank is a great exercise to retrain your ab muscles to work more efficiently. It is an isometric exercise for the stomach. "Iso" means "same", and "metric" means "length". Isometric literally means same length, or isometric simply means that you hold one position without moving.

You'd think that doing a plank is easy. Let me tell you, it's not easy! No kidding. Well, it wasn't easy for me, at least. I tried the plank last night and guess how long I was able to hold the position.

...

....

16 seconds. SIXTEEN! Yes, sixteen pitiful seconds. I'm such a loser, gaaah!

Anyway, I consulted Mr. Google about planking and I found a cool website called Plank Challenge. The goal is to plank everyday for 7 weeks (November 1 - December 19). Set a goal (for how long you will hold the plank pose) and you should be able to do it by December 19.

Hmmm, should I join?!

Holiday - 5 days work free

In celebration of Eid, we had a 5 holiday. The first three days were fine. Went for a "jalk" [jog-walk combo] for two days straight. Timed my 100 meter and 200 meter sprints.

I can't say I'm happy with the results but I'm not complaining. The fact that I was able to run is good enough.

while waiting for Gracey...
What's also good about having a national holiday, I get to have more running buddies. Gracey is my cousin ... sort of. [I won't bore you with our genealogy]

Gracey...ready to run
Aside from the running track, the park also has warm up/exercise facilities which we used ... (for a while). I managed to do 5 push ups and 10 sit ups. Not much but I'm still going to put it out here so I can compare after a few months.

I decided to rest on Wednesday. My body started complaining.

On Thursday, I had to accompany Gracey to the hospital. We stayed there till Friday morning. When we got home, I finished the house chores and got everything ready for the work week. Today, Saturday, is the first day of work. I haven't run for four days now. I should really get my groove back. Hopefully tomorrow.

Sprint - Walk Weekend

This is where I go for my weekend "jalk" ...  cross between a jog and a walk. (HAHA!!)
We started late today so we were not able to do our usual 5 laps. BUT, today we actually started sprinting.  Spring Sprint 100 meters then walk 100 meters, repeat and rinse.

I timed my 100 meter run at 28.1 secs.

Slow, I know. I was able to do 12 seconds 20 years ago. =)

I'll be documenting my "stats" now so I'll know my progress. Hopefully I'll improve.

Journey To Weight Loss

Today I learned about Fitday.com.

I was bloghopping and found Jan's 30 before 30 blog. She tracks her weight loss via fitday.com. Of course I signed up the next minute. I filled in the info needed (current weight, weight loss goal, food intake...etc).

Happy to report that I ate much less than what I burned today. I'll probably post a screen cap of my progress again after 4 weeks. There's no point in bragging when it's just one day data. I really enjoyed playing with the site, adjusting my goals, tweaking my activities and adding my food intake. It's just so much fun! I feel that I'm finally doing something. Something right this time.

I gave myself 6 months to achieve my ideal weight. *crossing fingers*

(Speed) Walk in the Park - The Details

I prepared my ipod playlist.
Set my alarm.
Got ready before 6 AM.
I was able to get hold of Mark at around 0630. I'll let it pass coz it was his birthday that day.

Mark and I after 5 kilometers.

All sweaty and flushed. I love it!

It was a great start. We agreed to do this every Friday morning. Oh, that's Mark's serious face. You should see him when he's goofing around. HILARIOUS! *Photos taken from my camera phone*

More good news. It seems I've found my training partner. I just found out that one of the guys in the office actually run marathons and stuff. He agreed to help me out. First things first, he's gonna help me with my shoe hunt. Then he'll take me to their leader his group of runner friends.

As you can see from my current state, I don't think I'll be prepared for the Dubai Marathon in January. But I'm so psyched to know that there are other marathons going on all year round. Me so happy!!

So, let me get some ZZZzzz's. I have to adjust my body clock and form new sleeping habits.

(Speed) Walk in the Park

I'll be starting my day tomorrow with speed walking. I figured that I have to really prepare myself if I want to join any marathon. I'll be taking it slowly, no need to rush my body.  For the past 8 years, I was happy with just staying at home and watch TV after work. This must stop. I. Have. To. Get. Fit!

So tomorrow, I'll be heading to the park near our place.

The park is characterized with a large water area as the total area of the pond stretches to 80,000 square metres, which represents 54.4% of the total area of the park.

Yeah, there's a huge pond in the middle of this park. It's HUGE! Good for early morning walks. It also has basketball and tennis courts.

I finally convinced someone to come with me. Mark, you and I have a date tomorrow! Expect your phone to ring before 6 AM!

Excuse me while I sync my ipod. =D

Getting Started

I'm getting so overwhelmed with my list! I don't know where to start.
It's making me think about lots of things, making me worry. And to think I'm not even done with the list!

Can I do this?
Can I afford all of these?!

Breathe in... breathe out.

Ok, let's take it one by one. I started checking out local activities I can do here in Dubai (yes, I'm in Dubai just in case you don't know yet). I found out that there is a marathon every January and it's a big thing apparently. I didn't know that!

I checked out their website: www.dubaimarathon.org. Seems I can join the fun with a small fee. But seeing the competition, I'm beginning to chicken out! I mean these people are runners. Real runners. While I, on the other hand, can't get myself to speed-walk. The only marathon I know are TV Marathons. (Probably why I look like a big-ass couch now!)

I don't even own running shoes. There was a time in my life that I'd wear nothing but rubber shoes. I run, walk, sleep with my rubber shoes. Now, all I have are my flip flops and a couple of pumps. Gaaah!!

Breathe in.. breathe out...

First things first. I should get myself some decent running shoes. Any suggestions? Are there specific types that I should be aware of? I should buy this soon so I can start training and do the marathon and then I'll do the triathlon....well, that's IF I survive.

The hunt for running shoes starts now!
